Jot

A shared text document that lives only on your devices

Open Jot

Write together in plain text, with no account. Edits go straight between the members' browsers, and every edit and permission is signed, so nobody in the middle can forge anything. Works offline.

What it does

  • One document, many people: edits from every member merge on their own, with no conflicts to resolve.
  • The document lives on the members' devices. Our server only knows that a random document id exists, never its name, text, format or members.
  • Invite by link. Nobody gets in until you have checked their name and safety code and approved them.
  • Owners, editors and viewers. Every edit and every change of permission is signed, so a viewer or a relay cannot forge an edit.
  • Works offline: keep typing, and everything merges when members meet again.
  • Plain text, or Markdown, code and other formats with highlighting. Free, no ads, no cookies.

Where it runs

In any modern browser, on a phone or a computer: just open jot.appbits.dev.

How it goes

Level 1, your documents: the list of documents on this device with your role in each, a delete button per document and a button for a new document.
1. Your documents
Level 2, a document that is yours: the Jot editor with a trip plan in a tab, a Save file button, the Peers window listing the owner and an invited editor, and a status bar saying it is looking for peers.
2. A document that is yours
Level 3, invite by link: the invite form in the Invites window with a role, a private label, an expiry and a Create link button for a single-use link.
3. Invite by link
Level 4, check who is who: an invited member in the Peers window opened to show a safety code to compare in another channel, a private nickname, their role and a button to remove them.
4. Check who is who

Can I trust it?

Jot explains in detail how it works, what it protects against and what it stores:

It's made by appbits, a one-person studio in Denmark. Who's behind it.
